About Malan

Hi, and welcome to my website. I would like to tell you a
little bit more about myself, and what you can expect from therapy.

My name is Malan, and I am an educational psychologist that helps adolescents, adults, and parents by providing a non-judgmental, safe and compassionate space in therapy. I am in private practice at The Village Medical Centre, Parktown North during the early evenings and on Saturdays from 9-2. You can schedule an appointment here and you can contact me here.

Finding a therapist to help you might have felt a bit scary or daunting to you - you took the first step to understand yourself better and to improve your mental health, even though this might be an unfamiliar experience for you. If you are not yet comfortable in trying therapy and may have some questions, you are more than welcome to email me and I would be happy to answer your questions.

I am fully bilingual in Afrikaans and English. I received my Masters in Educational Psychology at Stellenbosch University, and I am registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa and the Board of Healthcare Funders.

I have extensive experience in working with individuals who may have questions or concerns related to their sexual identity and gender identity. Even though sexual and gender minorities, or the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgnder (LGBT) communties have greater freedom than in the past, there are parents who struggle to come to terms with their child’s sexual identity. For this reason, in collaboration with my partner, Dr Grant Andrews, I wrote a book in the form of a parenting guide, enttiled How to Accept and Understand your Gay Son (Even if you’re not sure you can). We felt that speaking from our own perspectives would be more honest, but also believe that this guide has considerable value to parents and their sons and daughters of diverse gender identities and sexual orientations, too. I would be happy to send you a complimentary copy of the guide.

I work from an integrative approach: I stay focused and centred on you, and in a collaborative way, I build a relationship with you based on trust, empathy, and safety. I also work from a psychodynamic approach. This means that I help you to bring thoughts and feelings into your awareness that may be contributing to conflict and distress that you currently experience.

Please find more details about the services I provide here.

I look forward to meeting and working with you.
